Agree - NASA's budget currently represents about .05% of the total federal budget, and that's the lowest percentage it's ever been (it was over 4% in the years leading up to the moon landing).

(I’ve been rereading Hitchhikers Guide and it was kind of funny how much it came to mind while I reading your piece, despite the vast difference in style—when it comes down to it I think that series is really about the same thing.)
